Tip of the Week

Everyone knows the importance of proper wrist alignment when typing, lumbar support and proper neck alignment. The problem is, people forget. We get tired. We slouch. The more hours spent at the computer mean more strain on the eyes, wrists, back, neck, and shoulders. In addition, lack of movement impedes efficient blood flow to the organs, resulting in tiredness and muscle aches. Considering the amount of time spent at the computer, especially when working or taking a course online, it's imperative to ensure a safe working environment.

Here's a refresher and some easy things you can do to ensure you're working safely at the computer:

Make sure your keyboard isn't so high that your shoulders must lift to type, or so low that you have to lean forward. The computer monitor should be positioned so that your neck is in a neutral position. You don't want to have to look up to see the monitor, nor do you want to position your head downward. If your chair is too high, put sturdy books, a small bench, or other object that will safely elevate your feet so that you're sitting back comfortably in your chair.Try to use your laptop at a designated computer work station rather than on a sofa, dining room chair or in your car, especially if you plan to use it for an extended period of time.Remember, the best way to successfully complete higher education is to do so free from pain or injury and the best way to prevent that is to practice ergonomically correct posture.
